Choosing a location to journey into in Darkest Dungeon 2 will require you to determine how you need to build your heroes for the journey ahead of them. Based on where you decide to go, you’ll get different Trinkets, different Lair bosses, and different trophies. With some other areas, it’ll be somewhat more obvious which gifts they’re likely to bestow on you, but the Tangle can be a little confusing with its themes.
For the most part, the Tangle is about intermixing buffs and enduring through attacks. The land itself is filled with dense vegetation and the reanimated corpses of a once honorable legion of soldiers. Beyond these skulking cadavers, however, lie the keys to enhancing your team’s survivability beyond the reach of even the most fearsome eldritch abominations.
Why Go To The Tangle?
Heroes looking for more survivability through Block, or front line heroes looking for more ways to help their team, will benefit the most from a trip into the Tangle. Trinkets like Blistering Bugle, Clenching Claws, and the Dreaming General’s Reverberating Redoubt adds more utility for front line heroes. Otherwise, Trinkets like Insulating Insignia, Stone Mount, Unwavering Standard, Calibrating Censor, and the Dreaming General’s Footman’s Grog all increase survivability for your heroes.
On that note, the Dreaming General offers two trophies that are worth considering – The General’s Dream and The Nightmare’s End. The General’s Dream increases corpse damage by 200%, which would works best when combined with Larval Carrion Eater pet. However, the most important part of this trophy is how it immobilizes your heroes while the trophy is equipped. This is amazing for teams that are sensitive to the positions their heroes are in. Heroes like the Highwayman, the Grave Robber, and the Jester especially benefit from this since they can repeatedly use their attacks without fear of moving themselves into a rank where they can’t use their strongest skills.
The Nightmare’s End is useful if you need to visit the Tangle early. It reduces the cost of Trinkets by 75%, which makes the early game economy management much easier and lets you build your heroes up much faster. If your heroes need a Trinket from the Hoarder, this is a wonderful trophy to have early.
Heroes That Benefit From The Tangle
Hero |
Benefits |
---|---|
The Man-At-Arms |
Thanks to the Retribution skill and the plentiful options the sturdy Man-At-Arms has for gaining Block, the Man-At-Arms benefits from almost every Trinket and trophy you can get from the Tangle. |
The Flagellant |
Gaining Block and using the More! More! skill gives your Flagellant more of an opportunity to heal back to full health. Footman’s Grog lets the Maniac Flagellant steal debuffs from allies and then convert them into buffs. |
The Leper |
Reverberating Redoubt is perfect for the Leper because of his low speed, and Intimidate forces enemies to attack him. Calibrating Censer gives him a buff when he misses an attack, and the Leper’s speed is low enough to benefit from the 66% chance to gain block. |

Threats To Prepare For In The Tangle
- Obnoxious back line enemies.
- Tanky front liners.
- Enemies with high max HP and Block.
- Cadavers that will inflict Bleed.
For this region, you’ll want to make sure you have skills that can work around Block and skills that can reach the back line. Enemies like Drummers and Bishops can make your run much harder than it needs to be if they aren’t dealt with first. Drummers give buffs to other Cadavers at the beginning of the round with an Order token. These Order tokens will empower the next attack the targeted Cadaver uses.
Skills with damage-over-time effects are extremely useful here too, since their damage ignores Block and many of those skills can also reach the back line.
